Guided Reading planning
![]() | Planning Guided ReadingRead Hornsby, D. (2000). A closer look at guided reading. Armadale, Vic., Eleanor Curtain. pp.74-77 prior to planning your lesson |
- choosing an appropriate book for your group
- selecting the strategies and book features you wish to teach to that group
- Introducing the Text - how will you do this?
- Reading the text – Explain to students what specific strategy or skill you will be teaching them. How will you demonstrate the strategy to them? ( re-reading for meaning, using letter/ sound knowledge to check predictions in a word, how to describe a character, the main idea in a paragraph, reading fluently etc.)
- What will you assess as you listen to individuals read?
- Revisiting the Text – How will you revisit your teaching focus here? How will you help them practice the strategies etc. you have taught?
1. Overview of a whole guided reading lesson
Note the way that the purpose is set, she listens in as students read independently, then they return to the main focus areas at the end of the lesson. This is a really clear lesson for early years in guided reading.
Another overview of a whole guided reading lesson for Year 1-2 students
(Note- this video also shows a word work activity before the lesson, focussing on blends) The guided reading begins with an overview of the story, new vocabulary and then setting the purpose for the lesson. The teacher then listens to each child read while the others read silently. She then regroups and focusses on a teaching point that she wants to reinforce, based on her assessment of the students as they were reading to her.
2. Introducing the Text-
Younger students example ( including supporting students with special needs)
Older students - guided reading with Year 4/5 students
3. Reading the Text & Revisiting the Text
The teacher sets the purpose, then listens to individuals read. After listening to some individuals, the teacher re-groups and revisits the teaching focus for the lesson (see 6:10 onwards for Revisiting the Text).
Older Students- Year 4/5
